Vitiligo in general is an acquired abnormality that affects the skin and mucosa characterized by a depigmented macular boundary that occurs due to selective damage to melanocytes (Alikhan et al., 2011). According to Jain et al. Vitiligo is a commonly acquired hypomelanotic skin disorder occurs and is characterized by a creamy white macula bordered with various shapes and sizes. This condition is caused by damage melanocytes that lead to loss of pigment production in the skin and
mucosal surfaces.
The existence of various definitions and differences in clinical assessment methods vitiligo encourages the formation of Vitiligo European Task Force (VETF) on in 2003 that proposed a consensus on definition and classification vitiligo. Vitiligo European Task Force classifies vitiligo into two Large groups ie vitiligo vulgaris or vitiligo non segmental and vitiligo segmental.
According to VETF vitiligo vulgaris or common generalized vitiligo or non-segmental vitiligo is defined as a chronic pigmentation disorder obtained, characterized by white macules, often symmetrical and increased wide over time, resulting from a meaningful loss of function epidermal melanocytes and sometimes hair follicle melanocytes.
This group 10 covering focal vitiligo, mucosal vitiligo, acrofacial vitiligo, vitiligo generalis, and vitiligo universalis. Whereas, segmental vitiligo is defined equally with the above non-segmental vitiligo except for its unilateral distribution which can partially or completely follow the dermatomal pattern (Taieb and Picardo, 2007).
The classification of the revised VETF adds a mixed vitiligo group defined as a combination of early segmental vitiligo lesions which then develops with the emergence of bilateral depigmentation lesions of non-segmental vitiligo in the months to years (Ezzedine et al., 2012).
