vitiligo is a condition that affects the pigmentation of your skin and hair you may have heard of vitiligo because of Michael Jackson who developed the condition when he was in his 20s vitiligo actually affects one in a hundred people in the UK celebrities such as Graham Norton and mad men's jon hamm also suffer from the condition vitiligo causes patches of skin to lose color and turn pale and white this occurs when the affected areas have little or no melanin which is a dye like substance that gives your skin color and protects it from the harmful effects of the Sun without melanin our skin loses all pigmentation and turns white any hair grain from a white patch caused by vitiligo is generally white as well vitiligo can affect any part of your body but most often occurs on skin that is exposed to the Sun such as your face neck and hands patch sizes vary some people develop one or two small patches that don't develop whilst others get larger white patches that join up over a large area of skin patches caused by vitiligo are usually permanent although there are treatments available that can improve the appearance of your skin nobody knows for certain what causes vitiligo to develop but we do know that it is not infectious and you can't catch it from touching someone who has it if you think you might have vitiligo you should make an appointment to see your GP vitiligo is closely associated with autoimmune conditions so your doctor might check you to ensure that you don't have any of those you might need to have a blood test to check your thyroid function there are a number of ways to treat vitiligo and your doctor will advise you on the best course to take you
